Taking Children Off Antipsychotics Holistically

It's my belief that no mother would want their child to take a psychiatric medication if there's a natural, holistic alternative that would heal the child just as effectively.

This week's podcast will feature a mother, whose 9-year-old daughter was prescribed an antipsychotic medication. We talk about our work together in getting her daughter off her medication and the challenges and triumphs along the way.

Also (thanks to my brother's suggestion), I will be sending all my subscribers an email with the link to the entire podcast each Wednesday when it comes out. It should make it easier for you to access these podcasts.

Have a great week!

For parents searching for alternative psychiatric approaches

Before I knew anything about nutritional supplements' benefits for mental health, I also prescribed antipsychotic medications to children who "needed" it.

In 2003, I first used E. M. Power (a multivitamin and mineral supplement) on a child taking Zyprexa for his rapid-cycling bipolar symptoms. The Zyprexa caused him to gain so much weight in two months that he needed a new wardrobe. Between the use of energy medicine, changes in his diet, and support from supplements, he was able to come off his antipsychotic medication and move on with his life.

He contributed this testimonial for my website:

“I am an 11-year-old boy in the 5th grade. I started with Dr. Lee when I was five years old and on lots of medications. Back then I didn’t feel well, and I was tired all the time. I have been taking vitamins and minerals since I was six years old, and I feel healthy and better.”

Monya, the mother of the 9-year-old girl, will be telling her story on my podcast. She'll share some mistakes she made while administering the medication and what she learned from the tapering process. Although coming off an antipsychotic medication is harder than coming off any other class of psychiatric medication, children generally have an easier taper.

From working with children, I learned that healing them from mental illness is much easier than helping adults taper off their medications decades later. I hope that one day all children will start on nutritional support before being placed on medications so that we will have fewer adults who need to taper off medications when they "stop working."

Have a great week!

The Holistic Psychiatrist Podcast (Ep. 14):

Healing Children with Mental Health Issues Holistically

Check out the teaser for the new episode coming out tomorrow!

Children are often put on medications without an initial trial on natural supplements that support their innate ability to heal. This podcast explores the advantages of using a holistic approach for the treatment of depression, anxiety, and ADHD in a 9-year-old girl, who had been prescribed an antipsychotic medication called Abilify by a conventional psychiatrist. Her mother shares her story of what happened during treatment: lessons learned, mistakes made, and finally, withdrawal completed.
